MAAMAR OF THE WEEK

There are ten sanctities [within Eretz Yisrael (the Land of Israel)]

Eretz Yisrael is holier than all other lands, and how is its sanctity expressed? The Omer, Two Breads, and the First Fruits are brought only from Eretz Yisrael and no other land.

1. Walled cities are further sanctified, since we cast away Metzoraim (lepers) and we allow a corpse to be carried within the city, but once it is outside, we do not allow it back in.

2. Jerusalem is further sanctified, since there one may eat lesser sacrifices and the second tithe.

3. The Temple Mount is further sanctified, since Zavim (men who had an unusual emission), Zavot (women who had an irregular emission), Niddot (women in menstruation), and Yoldot (women who gave birth) [and did not immerse in a mikvah] may not enter.

4. The encircling path is further sanctified, since gentiles and those defiled from contact with the dead may not enter.

5. The Outer Courtyard is further sanctified, since a Tvul Yom (one who immersed that day) may not enter.

6. The Israelite section of the Inner Courtyard is further sanctified, since those who are required to bring the atonement sacrifice may not enter, and those who enter in violation are required to bring a sin offering.

7. The Kohanim's section of the Inner Courtyard is further sanctified, since Israelites may only enter for purposes of leaning , slaughtering, or waiving.

8. The are between the Sanctuary and the Alter is further sanctified, since Kohanim unfit for service may not enter.

9. The Sanctuary is further sanctified, since one may only enter after washing his hands and feet.

10. The Holy of Holies is further sanctified, since the High Kohen may enter only on Yom Kippur during the Service.

NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

Fellow Mikdash builders, Shalom.

The upcoming holiday tomorrow, Jerusalem Day, the 28th of Iyar, has historically been a day leading to the building of the Beit HaMikdash. The Rambam, telling about move of the temporary Sanctuaries after the semi-permanent Mikdash in Shilo was destroyed, states (Hilchot Beit HaBechirah 1:2), "After Eli died [the Mikdash in Shilo] was destroyed, and they went to Nov and built a Mikdash. When Shmuel died, they came to Giv'on and built a Mikdash, and from there the came to the Eternal Beit HaMikdash [in Jerusalem]." According to our tradition, the prophet Shmuel died on the 28th of Iyar. This lead to the preceding station and the search for a permanent Beit HaMikdash.

Nearly three millennium later, in 5727 (1967 ce), Jerusalem was retaken by the IDF on that very day. Although the Beit HaMikdash has not yet been rebuilt, it has since then had the potential to be rebuilt.

As you see in the "In the News" section, we have an opportunity to act this Jerusalem Day to redeem Har HaBayit. As we reach the "sefirat ha'omer" of "chesed shebemalchut", the beginning of the redemption, let us act and pray to further the redemption.

IN THE NEWS -- JOIN THE JERUSALEM DAY RETAKING OF THE TEMPLE MOUNT

Arutz-7 News: Friday, May 30, 1997

TEMPLE MOUNT PRAYERS ON WEDNESDAY

The Zo Artzeinu movement has announced that it will conduct visits to the Temple Mount this coming Wednesday, the 30th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem. The leaders ask that those who wish to participate come to the meeting point at Mughrabim Gate after having immersed in a mikveh (ritual bath) and wearing non-leather shoes. They note that there will be instructions as to the locations that are permitted for entrance by Jewish law. The first tour will depart at 8:30 AM. The Zo Artzeinu announcement reads, "We will stand up for our right to go up to the Mount and to pray for the survival of the people of Israel in their land."

(Zo Artzeinu, update 85, Har HaBayit on Yom Yerushalayim)

JERUSALEM DAY

This year we celebrate 30 years of liberation for Jerusalem. 30 years of soverignty, in a city without its heart, without its crown - Har HaBayit (the Temple Mount) is captive in the hands of foreigners.

On Wednesday, the 28th of Iyar, we will go up to the Mount:

Beginning at 8:30 AM, and all throughout the day, groups will meet at the Mograbi Gate (near the Kotel) and we will stand up for our right to go up to the Mount and to pray for the survival of the people of Israel in their land.

Please come after immersion in the Mikveh, wearing cloth shoes.

There will be guided instructions on site - who will instruct those who come where they are permitted to go.

On the anniversary of Jerusalem's liberation we will prove - that we still remember and long for our holy site.

COME ONE AND ALL - LET US GO UP - THE TIME HAS COME!

Zo Artzeinu

CORRESPONDENCE

Dear Yirmi,

From my research it appears to me there are two or three different models of the next: THIRD TEMPLE which the different groups are pushing. Do you know if all the competing groups agree on which Temple blueprints they will be using? There is the First Temple, Second Temple, Herod's Temple, Ezekiel's Temple and possibly other versions. Do you know which model the next Temple will be based upon?

Thank you for your great assistance.

Mike Young

Mike,

Yasher Koach on your question. After asking a rabbinic authority, I was told that the consensus is to build like the Second Temple, as specified in the Mishnah, Tractate Middot, unless there will be a prophet amoungst the Jewish people to instruct us to build otherwise or to modify an already existing Beit HaMikdash.

Chazak ve-ematz,

Letters from Gentile Supporters

Kind Mr. Fischer:

A friend of mine, knowing my heart for Israel, forwarded this post to me, and as I read it my heart began to beat faster than it ever has, and tears streamed unbidden from my eyes! It is like I am watching many of my prayers being ansered before my very eyes!

Before I go further, I do not want to represent myself falsely to you. I am not Jewish, but I believe ... The upshot of that is that every day I want to learn more about Torah. It does not make me want to come live in Israel, because it is not my land but yours, but it does make me pray fervently every day for the very thing you speak of in this remarkable post.

The Land belongs to YOU, particularly the Holy Mount, where presently sits that squatter's hut with the gold dome, desecrating the Place where HaShem, blessed be He, has put His Name! And truly, TRULY, may the Temple be returned to its place so He can come and reign in all His Chk'nah!! My heart is to bear as many of your sons on my shoulders as I can to bring them Home! My heart is to worship your G-d before His Throne, however far back I need to stand! Stand?? I should say, fall on my face!! I can't even hear a shofar without falling on my face, and if His Voice represented in the sound of the shofar takes me off my feet, what will His actual presence do?

Thank you, Sir, for building the model and inspiring those who see the model to see the true in their hearts and travail for it! If I were not a poor woman trying to support a disabled (asthmatic and chf-suffering) husband, I would love to contribute monetarily to your effort, but as it is, I am delighted that my prayers, joined with yours, will be of more value than if I could give six-figure gifts! A strong rope is made of many strands, and this one strand is hungrily desiring to be part of your particular rope, a prayer band bringing in the restoration of the Temple!

I also wanted you to know that there are a number of non-Jewish lovers of Israel like myself, in my part of the world (Amarillo, Texas, USA) who are even now, daily Praying for the Peace of Jerusalem, meeting on Shabbat to join our hearts to yours in redoubled prayer as we learn as best we can the traditions you have held dear and kept together as a people for these centuries by faithfully observing. In fact, it was our leader, Mark, who forwarded this to me. He will, I know, share this post with our group so we can join together lifting you up, this coming Shabbat, and on Shabbats to come.

Shalom, Suzanne
